January 28, 2010 Thursday, We drove from HotSprings to Slab City about 42 miles one way. We got on the 8 West and Took the 111 Exit to Brawley. Proceeding North on the 111 highay from Brawley the next smal town is called Calipatria then about another 18 miles is Niland where we turn right at the general store and proceed East Past the tracks and past the electric Substation station. Then about one more mile out is where you see the Famous Salvation Mountain.

Sat. Jan. 30, 2010 – You can
smell the charcoal and hear music early this
morning. Seems like stuff if happening. We
had coffee and I made biscuits and gravy for
breakfast. It is Danny’s favorite and it has
been a while since I made it. After breakfast
we went walking into town to see what was
happening. We stopped at the bar just up the
street from our rig and they gave us a sample
of their Bar-B-Q. It was really tasty. We just
sat outside and listened to the band they had
playing.
Page 75
After about ½ hour we headed further up the
street to the “big” rib cook off area. Oh my
gosh, tons and tons of people. They are
cooking ribs all around the area and have hay
bales for sitting down. We did end up buying a
rib and a soda. It was OK, but the ribs down
the block by our rig were better. Oh well, we
ate it and drank our soda and then we followed
the music to an area where they were having a
dance contest. This contest was for
everything from country line dancing, to West
Coast swing, East Coast swing, salsa.
Watched everyone dance and after they
picked the winner we headed back to the rig.
The winner was a couple from Brawley who
danced the West Coast swing – pretty much
the country two step. They were pretty good.
After we got to the rig we made lunch and
since it was so nice outside we decided to sit
and eat our lunch. As soon as we finished a
gentleman from across the street, who is
camping in his travel trailer, came by. His
name is Eric and his wife is Louise. They are
from Canada. We sat outside and talked to
him for about 1½ hours. After he left we got in
the car and drove to El Centro. Had to do
some banking and had to go to Costco and get
water. We snacked our way around Costco
and got really full. They had lots of food to
test today.
After we left there we headed home. Once we
got home we decided we needed to walk to
town and see what was going on with the
music. Down the block from us they were
having some bands play and a bar that had an
outside area. We walked around a little then
came home. Beatrice and Warren stopped by
to give me some Aleve for my knee. Think it
has some arthritis in it. Sure does hurt. I
thought it would be better in the dry desert but
that isn’t true. We talked to them for about an
hour. They are such a fun couple. Gosh we
have met some really nice people since we
have been here.
We saw Tom and Cornelia come back so
yelled “Happy Birthday” to Tom. He turned 75
today.
It is now 9:00pm and tome for bed. Tomorrow
we are going to move. We talked about
staying here for another 3 or 4 nights but then
changed our minds. It would be a lot less
costly but we want to experience some other
places. Tomorrow we are going to Jacumba
and then after that we are going to El Cajon.
These are two places neither of us have
been. Kind of looking forward to a change.
Everyday is an adventure.
Goodnight from the Carrot Festival in Holtville,
CA.
Sun. Jan. 31, 2010 – We are off
and headed towards San Diego area and
towards Ramona where we will be staying for
two weeks. We have a few stops along the
way. Where they will be is anyone’s guess.
Along this route is Jacumba, El Cajon and
Golden Acorn Casino, and Vieja Casino.
Wonder if we can stop in the casinos and stay
for free. There isn’t any BLM land along the
way. We will see.
Page 76
Mon. Feb. 1, 2010 – At 9:00am
we went to the pool and did water aerobics. It
was a great workout with stretches, crunches
and weights. Felt like I was back in Tulare at
the gym again except it was 9:00am and not 4:
30am!! We exercised for an hour and then
swam a couple of laps and then came home
and ate breakfast.
We got dressed and headed towards El
Cajon. We need to find how far away it is so
that we can go there and do banking and get
our license tags for the car. We found
“Golden Acorn Casino” not far from here.
Drove around the parking lot and found where
the motor homes can park then we continued
on down Historic Hwy 80. We found some very
small towns and a couple of places to camp.
One was the Cleveland National Forest and we
can camp there for $7.00 a night. There was
nobody camping there and the rain had
damaged the dirt roads. On further down
Historic 80 and back towards the hills we found
Lake M . We drove there and found a private
RV resort and then a county campground.
The county campground is partial hook up for
$20.00 a night. Probably won’t go there.
We left Historic 80 and got on to I-8 and
headed towards El Cajon. A few miles down
the road we found Viejas Casino. We did go in
and drive around and found where you can
park the RV for free, looks like overnight, and
then we went into the Casino. It was lunchtime
and for $7.95 p/p we ate the buffet. It was very
good. Lots of shrimp, Mexican food, Chinese
food and prime rib and all the sides. We
enjoyed our lunch and joined their “players
club” so when we go back we have $10.00 to
play at the casino.
Page 77
We will stay here at least one night before we
head to Ramona. We decided it was getting
late so we headed back to the RV resort. We
got back to the rig and hit the indoor pool and
then the hot tub. Boy it makes you really
relaxed. About 6:30pm we came home,
watched the news and by 7:00pm went to bed.
I was really cold and tired.
Danny turned on the movie “Airplane” with
Dean Martin and George Kennedy. We
watched that and then went to bed. My
favorite part in that movie was when George
Kennedy was trying to get that 707 unstuck
and the guy with him said “you don’t find that in
books” and George said “they made this 707
to do everything except read” and at the end
when they are looking at the hole and he walks
under the fuselage with his big ole cigar and
looks up and bops the fuselage with his clip
board and says something like “way to go lady.”
After the movie we just fell asleep, so relaxed
from the hot tub.
Goodnight from DeAnza.
Page 78
Thurs. Feb. 4, 2010 – Happy
50th birthday to my baby brother, Danny
Adams. Can’t believe he is the big 50!
Thought he would never catch up with me.
First thing this morning we went over to the
office and instead of checking out we decided
to stay 2 more nights. Just having such a
great time it is hard to leave.
Later this morning we went to the swimming
pool and just floated around. We were the only
ones in the pool for the first ½ hour an then
Laura came. We floated and talked with her
for another hour. By that time my hands were
really wrinkley. We enjoyed meeting and
talking with Laura. She suggested we come
over to the club house tonight for the social
hour and meet some of the people from the
resort. Sounds good to us.
We left the pool and were going to the hot tub
but they had just finished cleaning it and it will
be another hour before it is hot enough. Oh
well, rush home cuz it is cold outside!
Took a rest and got warm, made dinner,
watched the news and then headed to the club
house. We met some really nice people
including Laura’s husband Jim. We just sat
and talked and shared and then Papa Dave
started up the Karaoke machine. This isn’t
done most of the time but a few people got up
and sang and it was great entertainment. We
stayed and listened and danced til 9pm and
then headed home. Sounds like Friday night
will be a hot time in the old town. The real
Karaoke starts right after bingo and from what
they tell us it can last until 1am or later.
Hmmm, we haven’t stayed up that long for
ages, well, every since New Years 2010 in Las
Vegas..
Time to say good night from DeAnza.
Fri. Feb. 5, 2010 – It is kind of cool
outside and we need to do a load of laundry so
we don’t have to worry about it the first thing
we get to Ramona. Danny worked on the filter
and we got the orange cone cut so the outside
water filter will fit in it and stand upright. Great
idea! Danny worked a little more outside and I
went and put two loads in. Easy to do laundry
because there aren’t many people here right
now. Met a lady name of Jane and her
husband Vic, they leave in the RV resort.
It is too darn cold to use the hot tub or the pool
besides we have stuff to get ready so that Sat.
we can move. Yes, we are going to have to
leave Sat.
After dinner we headed over to the club
house. We got there when they were playing
bingo. Enjoyed just watching and then the
karaoke started and WOW some of those
people can really sing. We truly enjoyed our
evening listening and dancing and visiting. We
finally gave up and left about 1AM. Oh my, I
am sooo tired.
Page 79
We met some great people. The owner of the
resort was there as well as, Red, CC, Vicki,
Galen, and others. I even got up on stage and
acted like I was singing. I just was up there
giving the other girls company. They could
sing – I can’t. but I am great at encouraging
them.
Well, a late fun night and Laura wants us to
come and watch the water vollyeball before we
leave. Ohhh, I don’t think so. I am really tired.
Oh this bed feels so good with clean sheets,
the heater going and being tired.
One last goodnight from DeAnza.
Sat. Feb. 6, 2010 – Moving day!
We didn’t make it early enough for watching
the volley ball game. We just got up, ate
oatmeal and got the rig ready. We were going
to take a dip in the hot tub one last time before
we left but the rain is coming and we need to
get on the road.
As we make our way up I-8 the rain is falling
down in buckets and there is fog. Danny is
doing a great job, as always, driving this big rig
with the tow car. He is doing so well even
though we were up so late last night.
As we travel west on I-8 we see an accident
that looks like a BMW was going too fast and
put on the brakes and slid around and hit the
guardrail. Good thing there was a guardrail,
there is a cliff on the other side of the rail
We take the turn off to the Viejas Casino and
find the RV parking lot. Glad we have driven
here before. It makes it much easier to find
where we need to go since it is really raining.
We park and in front of us stops the casino
shuttle and takes us to the Casino so we can
register to stay here for the night. Done and
we get the shuttle back to the rig. Think we
need to rest just a little before we go back to
the casino.
The rain in pouring down and we are covered
up, nice and warm listening to the rain. Oh so
glad we are inside and NOT in a tent! Keep
remembering camping in the tent! Boy do I
love our motor home.
We get dressed, call for the shuttle and go to
the casino. Think we will just eat there and
maybe put our card in the machine and
gamble.
Dinner was Ok. Lots and lots of people eating
here. After dinner we wandered around the
casino, spent $2.00 and left. We left just in
time, the rain started as soon as we got back
to the rig. There are about 8 other RVs
parking here tonight. We are running our
generator so we can have electric and also we
are running our heater. It is sooo cold right
now.
Page. 80
The generator has been running for about an
hour so need to stop and shut it off. It is 8:
30pm and I am ready for bed. Tomorrow is a
moving day!
Goodnight from the parking lot of Viejas
Casino in Alpine, outside of El Cajon, CA.

Fri. Jan. 29, 2010 – Got up and took
the rig into the city of Holtville so we can dump and
get water. Talked to the lady in the office where you
dump and she gave me a flyer for the Holtville
Carrot Festival which begins on Sat. with the rib
cook off. I will look at it later, after we dump and get
water.
As we are dumping and cleaning our tanks a man in
a 5th wheel drives up and tells us about the Carrot
Festival and how he is staying out at the Hot
Springs, where we are, but he is moving into town in
a parking that is close to the area where they have
the festival. You can park there free. He said his
wife is sitting in her car saving his favorite place.
As we left the dump station Danny drove by the
parking area to see where it was and there was the
gentleman’s wife sitting in her car. Well we talked
about it on our way back to the Hot Springs and
decided that we would enjoy it if we came into town.
We got to our campsite at the Hot Springs and
hooked up the car and off we came into town. We
found a great parking spot so we parked and
unhooked the car and here we will be for a couple of
days. Right in front of us is the man from the dump
station. He came over and we met him and his wife.
His name is Tom and her name is Cornelia. Nice
couple. As we were talking to Tom and Cornelia
another lady stopped and began talking. Her name
is Audrey and her husband Dale are in the 5th
wheel behind us. We shared some stories and
questions and then I came in the house. I was
putting my stuff away when I saw a lady walking by
our rig looking like she had some questions. I went
out and she came over and asked if it was OK to
park here without paying. I told her yes and we
introduced ourselves. Her name is Beatrice and her
husband is Warren. She motioned to Warren that it
was OK to park here and he then came over and
joined in our conversation. Seems like they were
here a couple of years ago and “we had their spot”
!! It has been an ongoing thing between Warren
and I about “his” spot. Really nice people around
here.
This afternoon we went for a walk a block into town
and watched them set up for the Rib Cook Off.
There are lots of “cooks” setting up, from the Sheriff
Dept. to the Redneck Ribs and everything in
between. Looks to me like this is a big deal. We
wandered around town a little more, stopped in the
park and rested for awhile and then headed back to
the rig.
Made dinner and we worked on the computers for a
while and then it was time for bed.
Goodnight from downtown Holtville.

FREE to all Hot Spring Shower is a natural hot springs. Someone put a pipe in the ground and up from the ground came the hot GEOTHERMAL water.
|
We got to our site #13 and got set up. Lunchtime. I made lunch and we sat outside nude and ate lunch. That was a first. For some reason I didn’t fee uncomfortable. After lunch we went to the pool and hot tub and truly enjoyed it. After dinner we went to the club house and played pool.
Nothing closes here since it is a gated resort. There are lights in the trees and around the clubhouse and it is well lite here. Think in the spring it would really be pretty. It is still just a little chilly here right now.
Goodnight from DeAnza.
|
We take the Jacumba exit and head for DeAnza Resort. Not many signs. It is a “clothing optional” RV resort. We found a coupon in the RV Journal and have a free day pass that they gave us at Quartzsite. Doesn’t hurt to try it and see. WOW it is down a bumpy, dirt road that is not much better than the road to Bodie, CA. We came to the gate, this is a gated RV resort. They let us in and we drive to find the office. In the office we met Katie. She signed us in and gave us all the information. This is one of the most expensive places we are staying. It has a nice club house, restaurant, bar, game room, pool (2), hot tub and a gym, laundry. Katie explains that the only place you have to be nude is the swimming pool and the hot tub.

Tue. Feb. 2, 2010 –
Today is moving day. But first we had
to get some laundry done. Here it is 7:
00am and we are doing laundry.
Nobody here so it is nice. We put the
clothes in and then came home and
ate breakfast. We watched the travel
channel and then went over and folded
the clothes.
Danny put the clothes away and I did
the dishes so we could be ready to
move. Then we went to the hot tub
and enjoyed that for about 30 minutes
then came home, changed clothes and
went to the office to check out and ask
some questions.
Seems like for a small amount we can
join this RV park and get cheaper
rates when we come back so we did
that and told Katie that we were going
to stay tonight and tomorrow night.
Looks like early tomorrow we will have
to go to El Cajon and do the stuff we
need to get done, banking and the
DMV.
We came back to the rig and instead
of packing and getting ready to go we
unpacked what we packed and are
ready to stay two more nights. You
know, as members we get to stay for
$12.00 a night with full hookups and
not $60.00. Sounds like the right deal
for me. Am sure we will come back
here another one or two times within
the year. It is close to Quartzsite so we
will be here after we leave there next
year.
Wed. Feb. 3, 2010 –
Today was one of those days you just
hang around. We went to the
swimming pool and the hot tub and just
lazed around most of the day. I think
we have decided to stay Thurs. and
Friday night and then leave Sat. We
are going to stay at the Viejas Casino
parking lot for one night before
heading to Ramona.
Goodnight from Jacumba.
Right in front of us is the man from the dump station. He came over and we met him and his wife. His name is Tom and her name is Cornelia. Nice couple. As we were talking to Tom and Cornelia
|
